Norman Leslie Howard was born in 1923 (Newmarket Q3-1923 3B:789), son of Susan HOWARD of Lode

In the 1939 register, at Mill Road,Lode, it may well be his mother Susan [13-1-1887] single, and his grandmother, widow Sarah HOWARD [8-5-1854].

The 5th battalion, Wiltshire Regiment had 27 killed this day.
Their war diary entry simply states "
1830hrs. Attack on MALTOT 2230hrs. Coys gain objectives and consolidate."
Maltot is just south of Caen, west of the L'Orne river
